A POLICE officer was injured in a car crash during an operation to arrest three men suspected of stealing metal.

The police were called to Malton Industrial Estate at 2.55am yesterday after a car was seen entering and leaving the site several times.

When they arrived, the officers followed the vehicle before it stopped and then reversed, hitting the patrol car.

One officer suffered neck injuries and was taken to York District Hospital for checks, but he was not seriously injured.

The suspect car was abandoned at premises on York Road in Malton. Officers traced the men and found them at a property nearby.

A 19-year-old man from Ipswich, a 20-year-old from Malton and a 17-year-old, also from Malton, were arrested. They remained in police custody yesterday.

The officers recovered steel cable that they believe had been stolen from the site.

Officers have asked for anyone with information about stolen metal to call them on the non-emergency number, 101.
