Three Hull City fans arrested in Belgium in clashes which also saw Yorkshire teenager injured

Supporters said everything had been peaceful until they were funnelled by police down a narrow residential street and stopped outside a pub where they came under a “shower of flying bottles and beer glasses” thrown by a few Lokeren supporters.

The father of a 17-year-old boy told how his son was injured when he was hit over the head with a glass bottle.

Craig Harper, from Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, said it was “absolutely disgraceful.” “We were trying to get away and they just kept us altogether, taking us down this little street. Something needs to be done, the club should make an official complaint to UEFA.”

There were unconfirmed reports that six supporters were taken to hospital.

Police came in for much of the criticism for “needlessly kettling” fans and leading them into trouble.

In an Internet post wezzytiger said: “I went to watch a football match and enjoy the beautiful town of Lokeren. I didn’t expect to be bang in the middle of a shower of flying bottles and beer glasses.

“I expected as a professional hard-working person, to be protected from hooligans, but the Belgium police had other agendas.”

Another fan said it was a shame as there had been a “great party atmosphere” beforehand and said police should have cleared the pub before City fans were brought past.

Another said it was a “tiny majority” who caused the problems and hoped there wouldn’t be a revenge attack in the return game at the KC stadium in Hull next week.

One joked about the bar at the centre of the trouble, the Cafe de Mierennest: “If you are ever in Lokeren, you must visit the Meirennest. That pub’s a riot.”
