Three injured in stolen car crash

The stolen Vauxhall Corsa was in a head-on collision with a Skoda Octavia private hire taxi at around 4.30am yesterday outside the Dog and Gun public house in York Road, Leeds.

The Leeds-bound carrigeway was closed, causing huge tailbacks and delays for motorists.

The 24-year-old driver of the Corsa and his passenger, 26, were taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Police said the passenger was in a serious condition but the driver's injuries are not considered to be as serious.

The 26-year-old male driver of the private hire vehicle was also taken to hospital but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening. His passenger, a 34-year-old man, was uninjured.

A police spokesman said: "The Corsa had earlier been sighted on the nearby Rookwood estate by officers in a marked police patrol vehicle. The car failed to stop for officers and it was followed onto Osmondthorpe Lane where it turned into oncoming traffic on the city-bound carriageway of the A64.

"As the Corsa entered the A64 the police vehicle backed off and was no longer in pursuit of the Corsa when the collision with the Octavia took place near to the Dog and Gun public house."

The force's Professional Standards Department and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have both been notified.
