Three more children held over road death

Three more children have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of a man in a road crash.

The two boys, aged 12 and 15, and a girl aged 13, were released on bail while inquiries continue into the death of Michael Baker, 47, who was a passenger in a recovery truck which collided with a lorry on the A20 near the Swanley interchange in Kent.

A boy aged just 10 was arrested and bailed over the incident on Tuesday, while a boy of nine has also been "spoken to" by officers from Kent Police who are investigating reports of children throwing stones at passing traffic.

Mr Baker, from Littlehampton, West Sussex, died in hospital while the recovery truck's driver received treatment for a leg injury, but has now been discharged. He was a passenger in the recovery truck as he had earlier been in a crash in his own car on the M25.

Police said a group of youngsters were seen standing on the grass bank at the side of the London-bound carriageway at the time of the second incident at about 10.40am on Saturday.

As the lorry drove past, the driver saw something hit the windscreen, cab and side of the vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road.

While the lorry was stationary, the recovery truck hit it.

Chief Inspector Adrian Futers said: "It is our duty to the loved ones of Michael Baker to find out how and why he died." Officers wanted to speak to a boy who may hold vital information. He was white, aged in his mid-teens, and was believed to be wearing a brown-coloured top.

Police are also investigating a report of criminal damage to the windscreen of a white Mercedes Sprinter van travelling along the same section of the A20 at about 10.30am.

The van's driver reported that the glass was smashed by a piece of stone larger than a tennis ball.
