Three rescued from pan-blaze house

A 64-year-old man leapt into action when a blaze broke out in the kitchen of a York home early yesterday – trapping a mother and son upstairs.

The man used a garden hose and wet tea towels to smother the flames from an overheated chip pan which had filled the house in Brandsby Grove, Huntington, with smoke.

Two fire engines from York and one from Huntington had been called out when the alarm was raised just before 2am yesterday by a 20-year-old occupant.

The young man told the 999 operator both he and his 49-year-old mother were trapped in an upstairs bedroom, unable to get out of the house because of the smoke. They were given fire survival advice by the operator while fire crews went into the house, wearing breathing gear to lead everyone to safety.

The older man was taken to hospital for check-up and treatment for effects of smoke.

The fire service said unfortunately no smoke alarms were fitted in the house. The fire was only detected when the woman woke up to find smoke spreading throughout the property.
