Thugs in car leave man, 81, for dead

An 81-year-old man was mown down and left for dead after he refused to hand over cash to two thugs.

The victim was left lying in the road with leg injuries for 30 minutes before he was found by a member of the public following the shocking act of violence in Leeds.

He had been walking along Harlech Road, Beeston, when a dark car stopped near the junction of Dewsbury Road and the driver demanded cash.

After the elderly man refused and walked away, the car reversed and knocked him down before it was driven off, possibly towards Burlington Road, late on Friday night.

DI Stuart Piper, of City and Holbeck's Safeguarding Unit, said: "This has been a deliberate act of violence against the victim.

"It is a shocking but thankfully rare crime and we need to identify those responsible.

"Anyone who may know who these men are, or who can help to identify the car they were driving, is asked to contact police."

The victim was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and has since been discharged.

The driver of the car is black, about 30-35, slim and about 5ft 3 in.

He was clean shaven with big eyes and was wearing dark trousers and a dark, short-sleeved striped shirt.

His passenger was white.
