Ticket holder stakes claim to £56m prize

A mystery ticket holder is awaiting a huge payout after staking claim to the UK's biggest-ever lottery prize of £56m.

Camelot, which operates the National Lottery, said it was not be possible to verify the EuroMillions jackpot winner until today. If the claim is validated, the mega prize could be paid out when the banks open.

It is not yet known whether the winning ticket belongs to an individual or a syndicate or where it was bought, according to a National Lottery spokesman.

He said: “We are looking forward to welcoming this ticket holder to our millionaires club which is already 2,400 strong.”

The winning ticket shares Friday night’s overall jackpot of 113m with one other which was bought in Spain.

If the ticket belongs to an individual rather than a syndicate, it will be the biggest Lottery jackpot prize ever paid out to a person in the UK, the spokesman said.

The prize would also mean the winner would immediately become the 980th richest person in the country, according to TheSunday Times Rich List 2009.
