Time to party as book lifts lid on city's glittering 1970s club scene

A NEW book about Sheffield nightlife in the 1970s is set to lift the lid on the era when the city boasted the largest nightclub in Europe.

The book, Dirty Stop Out's Guide to 1970s Sheffield, details the history of Club Fiesta, which hosted performances from stars such as the Jacksons, Stevie Wonder, Tony Christie and Tommy Cooper.

Author Neil Anderson said: "The enthusiasm of people for the time has been infectious.

"I've interviewed former staff of venues that include Club Fiesta, Buccaneer, Hofbrauhaus, Top Rank, Josephine's, Black Swan, Baileys, Sheffield City Hall and more.

"As well as the scores of people that contacted me who still reside in the area I've also spoke to people that live hundreds of miles away, in one case thousands.

"Judi Emm, now an author based in Canada and a former Sheffielder, sent me some amazing stuff from her time working as a cocktail waitress in Club Fiesta."

Mr Anderson also wrote Take It To The Limit, about Sheffield's iconic Limit nightclub.

He will be signing copies of his book at the Oxfam bookshop in Glossop Road between noon and 2pm on Thursday next week and at Waterstones in Orchard Square between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, July 17.
