Time is running out for latest victims of disappearing Yorkshire coastline

THE residents of Aldbrough in East Yorkshire are the latest victims of the fastest eroding coastline in Europe.

Edith and Brian Grantham, of Camp Lane, off Seaside Road, know it is only a matter of time before the land on which they live is swallowed by the sea.

But having lived there for more than 20 years and reached their late 70s, they do not want to up sticks and start again.

"We are 76 and 78 and our time is running out," said Mrs Grantham. "We don't want to move, this is our home."

But life is getting harder after East Riding Council moved a concrete barrier inland to stop vehicles falling into the sea, leaving the couple unable to drive to their bungalow.

And the owners of the adjoining caravan park are reluctant to provide pedestrian access through their land.

The general manager at Aldbrough Leisure Park, Paul Allison, said: "If anybody tripped or fell or was hurt they would be suing us. It's not a case of being obstructive or awkward but we've got our customers to think of."

A spokesman for East Riding Council said: "Recent significant cracking of the road and movement of the cliff has forced urgent action. These signs indicate that more of the road could disappear imminently with prevailing weather conditions."
