The window to enter this year’s Yorkshire Business Awards will close in just a few weeks.

The awards, held on December 7 in Leeds will raise funds for Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Former Prime Minister Sir John Major has been unveiled as the keynote speaker at this year’s event which will also honour former home and education secretary Lord Blunkett, and for author and educator Gervase Phinn – both of whom will receive the Bobbie Caplin Yorkshire Legend Award.

Entries are sought in the categories of Business Leader of the Year, Board of the Year, SME of the Year and Standout Small Business of the Year.

For the business leader award, the judging panel will be looking for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to their business, to the benefit of the workforce, investors, customers and suppliers and also to Yorkshire’s economy and community.

For board of the year, the emphasis will be on team work and judges are looking for a company, whether private or quoted, which has maintained a strong performance and profit record. The award will also be judged on its composition, its internal and external relations and its general profile in the market place.

SME of the Year will see judges looking to identify an organisation with an annual turnover of £20m–£100m that
is demonstrating its ability to grow or a strong potential to do so.

Meanwhile, Standout Small Business of the Year is looking for companies with a maximum turnover of £20m, making high impact in its field and having done something different. Firms which have had products which have taken them into new markets and those who have had exceptional growth over a short period of time will also be likely to win favour with judges.

The deadline for entries will come on Friday September 21 with judging to take place shortly thereafter.

Elaine Owen, chair of Variety in Yorkshire, said: “We want to honour the best companies in our region and recognise the fantastic contribution they
make to our economy and our society.
