Time short to nominate awards hopefuls

NOMINATIONS for a new annual award which aims to recognise Sheffielders who have done something special for their city are set to close at 5pm today.

The Lord Mayor's Civic Awards is a scheme developed by Sheffield Council to honour those who have been nominated by members of the public.

Recipients of the award must have shown exemplary service to their city or done something especially significant.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council said: "Sheffield has a range of awards, from the granting of the Freedom of the Borough to the Legends, the 'superstar' stars outside the Town Hall.

"This scheme is one way of recognising Sheffielders, many of whom may be unsung heroes, for their hard work, dedication to others or success.

"Sheffielders can nominate worthy recipients either online or in writing.

"There are no categories for the award and it is also open to individuals of all ages who have helped to put Sheffield on the map by achieving national or international recognition. Each nomination must have two people supporting it."

Up to six winners will receive a Lord Mayor's Civic Award each year. Recipients of the award will receive a specially-designed trophy created by students at Sheffield's Freeman College who specialise in metalwork and design.

All nominations for the awards must be received by 5pm tonight and the evening awards ceremony will take place at Sheffield Town Hall on Tuesday, May 11.

Nomination forms and further details on the awards can be found on the Sheffield Council website or from the Lord Mayor's office in the Town Hall.

Meanwhile, it was announced earlier this week that cancer expert Professor Barry Hancock has been chosen as the next Sheffield Legend to be added to the city's "walk of fame."

His plaque is now set to join those of Jarvis Cocker, Lord Coe, Michael Palin, Sean Bean and Def Leppard outside the Town Hall. Sheffield Legends are nominated by members of the public.
