Titanic job for steel city

Engineers at a Yorkshire firm have made an exact replica of the Titanic's anchor for a new television series about the doomed passenger liner.

Sheffield Forgemasters staff have worked on the project for more than six months, planning, casting, forging and machining it at the company's Brightside Lane base.

The anchor has been created for the Channel 4 documentary series We Built Titanic, and Forgemasters is now the only company in the UK capable of manufacturing the heavy components required for the anchor, the original of which is shown inset left.

The finished product will be hammer tested, a traditional Edwardian method which uses a 10lb sledge hammer, before being put on display in Netherton, in the West Midlands.

Roger Richardson, director of the foundry at Forgemasters said: "The anchor has been a very rewarding project to work on."
