The accident, involving two cars, happened at just after 2pm near junction 42. The M1 northbound was closed between junctions 42 and 44. One person had to be cut out of their car. Emergency services confirmed a two-year-old was one of those in the vehicles. The child was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with non-serious injuries.

The northbound stretch of the M1 remained fully closed for a while, with just one lane reopened as the scene was cleared. The motorway was fully re-open by about 6pm.
