Tom dives in for a new challenge

Sporting prodigy Tom Daley will appear in Sheffield at the beginning of next month when he takes part in a national championships at the city Ponds Forge sports centre.

The 15-year-old will participate in the British Gas National Championships, which take place between Friday, February 5 and Sunday, February 7. Organisers said he would use the event as training for the international season.

The teenager, who was last in Sheffield for the BBC Sports Personality of Year awards in December, said he planned to try one of the world's hardest dives during the competition which involves two and a half somersaults and two and a half twists.

He added: "I am really looking forward to competing in Sheffield again. I am excited to use my new dive for the first time in competition and see how it goes.

"It is one of the hardest dives out there and we have been working on it since I came back from the World Championships in August.

"For me this competition is going to give me a good confidence boost."

The championships will be open to the public and tickets, which cost 2 a day, will be available at Ponds Forge on the days the event is taking place.
