Top referee helps kick-off hospice charity campaign

WORLD CUP referee Howard Webb visited young patients at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to mark the Football League’s support for Hospice Care Week, which runs from this coming Saturday until Friday, October 14.

Webb, who lives in Rotherham, is a patron of the hospice in North Anston, which cares for terminally ill children from an area encompassing South Yorkshire, north Derbyshire, North East Lincolnshire and north Nottinghamshire.

He said: “If I had to choose one word that hospice care means to me, it would be ‘support’.

“In the time I’ve been involved with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, I’ve been amazed by the lengths that hospice staff, volunteers and local people will go to in order to support seriously ill people and their families, helping them to live life to the full.

“All over the country, local hospices like Bluebell Wood also need support from the public. “Together, they must raise £1.5m every day to keep going.

“That is why I am thrilled that every Football League club is raising vital funds for its local hospice this season.”

South Yorkshire football clubs Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United and Doncaster Rovers are all supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice this season as part of the Football League’s partnership with Help the Hospices.

Collections will be taking place at each of the clubs

Webb added: “If football fans apply the same passion and loyalty to their hospice as they do for their clubs, they can make an extraordinary difference to people with life-limiting illnesses.”
