Top rehabilitation unit moves a step nearer

A HOSPITAL in South Yorkshire has taken a further step towards becoming a specialist rehabilitation centre after the final few patients were transferred there from Doncaster’s Tickhill Road Hospital.

Montagu Hospital in Mexborough is currently in the process of becoming a rehabilitation unit for patients recovering from accidents and medical conditions such as strokes and broken hips or after amputations.

Work on building a new centre on the Montagu site is set to
begin by the end of the year, with completion set for next
summer.

However, in the meantime, rehabilitation care for people in Doncaster and the Dearne Valley is being centralised on existing wards at the Mexborough hospital.

Now the final 13 patients at Tickhill Road have been transferred to Montagu Hospital.

Rod Kersh, clinical director for the care of older people and rehabilitation at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The move to Montagu has been carefully planned for several months to have the minimal impact possible on patients and their families.

“We recognise that Tickhill Road may have been closer to home for some of our patients and apologise for any inconvenience, but the move to Montagu is an important phase in the development of a truly world-class rehabilitation centre for people in Doncaster and Dearne Valley.”

The changes caused controversy when they were first revealed, as the creation of the rehabilitation unit meant moving “blue light” services out of Mexborough to Doncaster.

However, the proposals were approved by Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group in February this year following a public consultation.
