Top riders to saddle up for city cycling festival

SOME of Britain's leading riders are due to compete in a major cycling festival in York this summer.

A day-long series of races for professional riders to amateurs is being staged as part of a multi-million pound bid to increase the number of cyclists in the city.

Residents, schools and businesses are being recruited to compete in community events, while club cyclists from around the region are also due to take part in races.

The event, on Sunday, July 25, has been organised as part of the Cycling City York project and will finish with a race that will form part of the Elite National Circuit Series, bringing the top teams from across the UK to York.

Cycling City York's programme manager, Graham Titchener, said: "This is the first time for many years that York has hosted an event of this kind.

"We're delighted to be working in partnership with Clifton Cycling Club and British Cycling to organise this event. It should attract thousands of additional visitors to York, and will be a wonderful event for our communities, businesses and visitors alike."

Races will start and finish in Duncombe Place and the route will take competitors through the heart of the city.

York was one of 12 locations in Britain to be awarded cycling town or city status in 2008 after fighting off competition from 74 other local authorities to win funding under the 94m national project.

The York project has been given 3.68m in Government cash to improve and develop facilities for cyclists.
