Torchbearer’s delight after taking part in first relay

A WOMAN from Driffield has spoken of her pride at being a torchbearer for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria.

Jane Wells, 24, carried the flame on the first day of its tour in Solden and Ischgl as it made its way to Innsbruck for the start of the games.

Ms Wells, who was invited to represent the UK by games presenting partners Samsung, said: “It was such an incredible honour to be chosen to carry the Youth Olympic Flame and become part of this new chapter of Olympic Games history. I had an absolutely fantastic time and am grateful to Samsung for enabling me to become part of such a great spectacle.”

The Samsung torchbearers also received a skiing master class lesson in the Austrian Alps and enjoyed a three-night stay in a four-star hotel.

Andrew Garrihy, director of corporate marketing at Samsung UK, said: “We are proud of the part Samsung is playing in the Winter Youth Olympic Games and the Innsbruck 2012 Youth Olympic Torch Relay, and pleased that Jane enjoyed her experience carrying the Olympic Flame.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for all involved and we are delighted that they are now part of the Olympic legacy.”

Samsung is also playing a key role in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, which sees the Olympic Flame being carried across the UK over 70 days before arriving at the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27.

Organisers said the torch would “shine a light” across Yorkshire when it is carried through the region in the build-up to this summer’s games.
