A TORY councillor has been suspended for 20 weeks for a comment made on the website Twitter after a stormy meeting of Hull Council.
Tory group leader John Fareham called protesters in the public gallery at a debate on the local authority’s budget “the usual collection of retards... spoiling it for real people.”
He tweeted an apology but the council launched an investigation after two complaints. A committee has now decided he breached the council’s code of conduct. Shortly before the tweet Coun Fareham had attended diversity training following a previous complaint.
He said yesterday: “The hearing was in my absence and a result of that I have sought leave to appeal and I have asked the council to lift the suspension pending that appeal.”
