Tourism information staff win accolades from judges

Tourism information staff in Hull and the East Riding have proved worthy ambassadors for the area's £615m tourist industry, which supports more than 15,000 jobs, according to research yesterday.

At a VIP reception at Beverley Tourist Information Centre in Butcher Row it was revealed every centre in the area shone in the 2010 Visit England mystery shopper inspections.

The centres were assessed by a personal visit from a mystery shopper and phone and e-mail inquiries – examining everything from the speed of response to e-mails to the conversational skills of staff.

Overall, the judges found the Hull and East Yorkshire centre performance improved by an eight per cent margin.

Officials say the excellent results follow a successful year for the centres, with both the Humber Bridge and Hull city centre offices making the final of the prestigious Visitor Information Award at the 2010 White Rose Awards.

Coun Jane Evison, cultural services portfolio holder for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "I would like to congratulate all of the hard-working staff who offer such a fabulous welcome. Their efforts make visitors' experiences here even better."

Janet Reuben, chief executive of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, the official tourism body for the area, said: "It is magnificent that our dedicated staff are been recognised for their exceptional service. The tourist information centre is the front line of communicating with our visitors and providing them with a friendly, reliable service is essential to making sure they enjoy their time here."
