Tourism prize keeps Larkin’s toads alive

HULL’S biggest public arts project Larkin With Toads is continue to gather plaudits after winning a regional tourism award.

The scheme, which saw 40 larger-than-life fibreglass toads placed around the city as part of a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of poet Philip Larkin, won the remarkable experience category in the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards.

In total the were 13 winners in the second year of the annual awards scheme, which recognises the best people, attractions and hospitality businesses in the area’s tourism industry.

The awards also made it a great year for Hull councillor David Gemmell, who is nearing the end of his tenure as the city’s Lord Mayor, and won the lifetime achievement award for his role as chairman of Hull visitor attraction The Deep.

The Star at Sancton won the best pub, and other winners included Bridlington Spa as best business, the Boars Nest for best food, Willerby Manor reception team for the best welcome, Kilham Hall Country House for the best breakfast and Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School as best newcomer.

Janet Reuben, chief executive of awards organisers Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, said: “The calibre of this year’s finalists was exceptional and it was immensely challenging for our judges to choose the winners.

“The quality and quantity of nominations received this year was phenomenal and is reflective of the strength of our tourism industry.

“The awards make a real difference to the winners and are vital for promoting and improving Hull and East Yorkshire’s tourism industry. I am hugely grateful to our sponsors whose support makes the REYTAs possible.”

A report this week revealed that Larkin With Toads had generated £500,000 for the local economy.

Tourism is worth an estimated £615m to the area’s economy each year.
