Tourism success is model for others

THE history and heritage of York have been used to lay the foundations for a blueprint to attract more visitors across the Irish Sea.

The Yorkshire city was used as a case study in a campaign that has been launched to attract more tourists to Irish towns such as Westport, Dingle and Kilkenny.

The tourism organisation, Filte Ireland, has introduced the project to help the towns use their history to entice more tourists to spend more and stay longer. As part of the initiative, more than 1,000 overseas visitors in 10 historic towns were surveyed, including York.

York Council's assistant director, Roger Ranson, said: "York has the strongest performing economy in the North, so we're delighted that Filte Ireland has used the city as a case study in best practice for attracting tourists.

"Attracting over seven million visitors every year, York has a strong and buoyant economy, so is an excellent example for other cities to use."

Visit York's chief executive, Gillian Cruddas, said: "We believe the secret of our success lies in innovative ideas, creative marketing and PR and working with businesses and partners across the city and the county to add value to our campaigns."
