Towering monument to heritage

BUILT in violent times when death by sword or from a violent mob was a real possibility, Paull Holme Tower has been a bastion from attack for centuries.

A lonely, romantic tower with battlements, standing somewhat incongruously in a farmer’s field 10 miles east of Hull, on the banks of the Humber, it is a mystery how it survived over the centuries while buildings that surrounded it were pulled down and a nearby village deserted. It is said a bullock “of considerable size” once managed to get in, squeezed itself up the narrow staircase and fell over the battlements to its death.

The grade one listed ancient monument will be opening to the public this weekend for free as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days.

The tower, off Thorngumbald Road, Paull, will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
