Town expects big crowds at festival's host of attractions

CROWDS of more than 50,000 are expected to flock into Beverley on Sunday December 12 for its 16th Festival of Christmas – featuring stars of film and TV, historical reeneactors and Father Christmas in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Highlights include the reindeer procession through the town at 10am, with a team of adults and juveniles from the Cairngorm Reindeer centre in Scotland – with as yet unnamed celebrities invited to head the parade along with mascots and civic dignitaries.

At the centre of the festival is the Victorian Market in Saturday Market and the Victorian fairground with rides and attractions for young children.

There will also be a classic car rally, military, pipe and brass bands and at North Bar the Sealed Knot will be performing a street skirmish from the Civil War.

Organising committee chairman Coun John Bird said despite the recession he was optimistic that the event would be the best yet: "Everything is free. We have a high-quality crafts market with 110 stalls and all the entertainment is free.

"It is our most exciting and ambitious programme ever and there really is something for all the family to enjoy.

"We started from very humble beginnings and the festival has outgrown all our expectations."

The Treasure House will be opening on the day, with classical guitarist Kevin Wain entertaining visitors.

The Guildhall will also be open with the Mayor's Parlour decorated in Victorian style.

The festival opens at 10am and closes at 4pm and the usual park and ride service will be operating from the racecourse.
