Town hall secrets revealed for birthday celebration

Huddersfield’s Town Hall opened its doors on Saturday for a day of celebration to mark its 130th birthday.

Visitors got the chance to see parts of the town hall they don’t usually get a chance to see including the depths of the spectacular building which originally housed the prison cells used to hold people awaiting trial in the old court room, once housed there.

Coun Shabir Pandor, Kirklees Council cabinet member said: “Kirklees is nationally recognised for protecting the heritage of its town halls. This special occasion celebrates 130 years of this prestigious venue and gives everyone the chance to explore the building for themselves.”

The Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Eric Firth, opened the event which offered visitors a chance to take in live entertainment, go on tours of the building and enjoy live music from local groups including the Honley Male Voice Choir.

Delving into the history of the building visitors were able to see images of how the town hall looked in years gone by, including significant events such as Royal visits. For old movie fans, one of the rooms was transformed into a cinema as Huddersfield Film Makers play historical footage dating back to 1949. The venue today hosts weddings and one couple exchanged their vows during the festivities.
