Town relishes new homes investment

A NORTH Yorkshire market town could benefit from £3.5m of new investment after Ryedale councillors gave the go-ahead for the building of nearly 200 homes.

Norton, Malton, is to get its biggest housing development for decades with the building of 186 properties on the site of the former Westfield Nurseries.

The Persimmon Homes development, in Scarborough Road, will provide 69 affordable homes for the town, plus a corporate contribution of nearly 493,000 towards the Brambling Fields improvement scheme on the nearby A64.

Other benefits will include 78,562 to provide extra accommodation at the local Community Primary School, and 273,000 to upgrade and provide open spaces in Norton.

Lilian Coulson, agent for Persimmon, said the scheme would be a major asset to Norton in terms of providing a wide range of homes which will range from one to four bedroomed properties.

An existing house is to be demolished to provide better access to the site from Scarborough Road.

Coun Howard Keal maintained the development could generate as much as 3.5m over the years to Norton through the investment.
