Town’s wards to get more funding

Communities across Barnsley will have an extra £126,000 driven into them this year as the council increases its grants support.

The Community Support Fund (CSF) has been increased to £525,000 for 2012/13, with £25,000 allocated to each of the borough’s 21 wards.

However, wards are still £4,000 a year short of the £29,000 they once received, figures in a report to Cabinet reveal.

The pot was slashed to £399,000 last year – equating to £19,000 per ward – from £609,000 each previous year since 2001.

The money supports projects which keep communities clean, safe and green, promote economic growth, community involvement and development and support vulnerable people, children and families.

The fund also makes grants to council services such as highways, neighbourhoods, parks, street lighting and community safety.

The report notes: “The CSF has worked well to date with local communities across Barnsley benefiting. The grants often provide interim solutions for areas and the commissioned work brings benefits to the wards which would not otherwise be delivered from any other council service.”
