Trade hope from Canadian link

CIVIC leaders in North East Lincolnshire are hoping for better international trade links following the signing of a friendship agreement between Grimsby and Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

The deal formalises economic ties between the town and the Canadian island in relation to the seafood, ports and logistics, renewables, academic and tourism sectors. It follows a visit to Cape Breton Island last June by a delegation of business leaders led by Wynne Griffiths, chairman of the Humber Seafood Institute, and its Trade Corridor Group.

North East Lincolnshire Council leader Andrew De Freitas, who signed the agreement, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the council to work with overseas partners who have similar economic challenges and opportunities.

“I wish the partners in Cape Breton and local partners success in achieving their goals and ambitions and thank the trade corridor group for facilitating the friendship agreement.”

It is hoped the agreement will stimulate trade, establish a mutual economic development strategy and create jobs.
