Traders celebrate victory in Britain's Best Market contest

TRADERS in Doncaster who set out their stalls to impress judges are celebrating after winning the "Britain's Best Market 2011" award.

Launched in 2005, the national awards are judged by a panel of retail market experts who met yesterday at an event in Birmingham.

Town Centre manager Roy Dean said: "This is fantastic news and I'm very proud that we have been recognised as the top market in Britain. We were up against very stiff competition.

"With many positive improvements at the markets now starting to bear fruit including a greatly improved uptake of tenancies – I think we really deserved to win."

Revitalising Doncaster's historic markets has been a priority for Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies and a programme of extensive improvements is currently under way to help rejuvenate this area of the town centre.

He said: "I am delighted by this news. Doncaster has the finest markets in the UK and it is no surprise to me that we have won.

"With over 400 stalls the markets have an astounding array of goods and produce on sale and date back over 800 years.

"This award will no doubt bring even more visitors from far and wide to Doncaster's historic markets."
