Traffic alert over roundabout works

ROADWORKS are set to begin at junction 34 of the M1 motorway, at Meadowhall on Monday.

The works by the Highways Agency are the first phase of a scheme to widen the roundabout, which will increase its capacity to reduce congestion and delays.

Before the widening work begins early in 2011, the Highways Agency will be upgrading the traffic lights and diverting a water main which runs across it.

Work to replace the traffic lights will take nine weeks and, in order to minimise disruption, will take place at night. There will be lane closures on the approaches to the roundabout and also on the roundabout itself.

Highways Agency project manager Steve Wright said: “Once complete the widened roundabout will smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion at the junction.”

Engineers will start diverting the water main in June and are hoping to complete the works within 15 weeks.
