Traffic chaos as crash closes M1

THOUSANDS of commuters endured traffic chaos last night after a crash closed the M1.

The northbound carriageway was shut at junction 35A, north of

Sheffield, at around 4.30pm after a collision at Tankersley.

Police said the crash involved a red Volvo and a black Vauxhall Astra. No-one was injured in the Volvo but the air ambulance airlifted the woman driver of the Astra to the Northern General Hospital. Her injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

Three children in the Astra were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Traffic tailed back several miles to junction 34 at Meadowhall and surrounding A roads also became gridlocked. The M1 was reopened around 6.30pm.

Motorists also faced disruption after a crash on the A1 which left a man injured. Emergency services were called after a Land Rover with a boat on a trailer crashed into the central reservation near Bramham at 10.52am yesterday.
