Mrs Lewis, of Farriers Court, Wetherby, near Leeds, had moved to Yorkshire 18 months ago after a change in her husband's job. The couple married in Wetherby in April.

Her younger sister Jeanette Baskeyfield said: "The whole family is devastated.

"Ruby and Mark had just got married and settled down. They were happy newlyweds and this was supposed to be one of their happiest times together – their honeymoon.

"They didn't go straight after the wedding because they wanted to save up for it, stay in a five-star resort and do it properly.

"We're just in shock. All we know is that she suffered head injuries. We don't know what happened and we may never get to find out."

Mrs Lewis, a former air stewardess, spent six years travelling around the world with British Airways after graduating from Staffordshire

University with a degree in English literature.

An inquest into her death was opened on Monday but the coroner is still awaiting the results of the post mortem examination.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the hospitalisation of a British national on August 28 in Crete. We provided consular assistance at that time."
