Oxfam's 100km sponsored walk kicked off at 7am on Saturday morning with a total of 136 four-man teams - 537 walkers – aiming to complete the arduous course taking in some of the Dales' toughest peaks.

Heading the pack going into the evening was the team from Hope Vision Factory Racing, followed closely by the Jellyatrics. Both teams are expected to cross the finish line at Aireville School in Skipton shortly after midnight, so completing the 62-mile circuit in just over 17 hours. Third-placed Skipton Rugby Clubs Vets are almost an hour behind, with the majority of teams not expected to finish before mid-morning on Sunday.

The weather offered near-perfect walking conditions throughout Saturday – warm and sunny with a smattering of high cloud. However, light showers were forecast in the early hours of Sunday morning which threaten to dampen the spirits of the tired walkers as they approached the final sections of the course.

But Leeds barrister Nick Worsley was upbeat when he spoke to the Yorkshire Post shortly after 7pm as his team Los Tidiot approached Checkpoint Three at Buckden in an impressive 22nd place.

"It's been really good," he said. "The weather has stayed clear and has been pretty much ideal really – though it has been hot and sticky. And we've got out waterproofs at the ready in case the weather does turn. It's still nice and light but we'll be lighting up our torches in a couple of hours I should think.

"We've been up Malham Cove and most of the other main heights and we're doing fine. The hardest part so far has been walking past the occasional pub, watching all the people in the beer garden enjoying a cold beer. We're all coveting fish and chips now - but I think we'll be eating something a bit more sensible when we do stop."

The team suffered a pre-race blow on Friday night when the car of one of its members, Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, broke down in Nottingham on his way to Yorkshire.

Mr Buchanan-Dunlop was forced to hitchhike through the night in order to make it to Skipton in time for the 8am start – meaning he began the 100km walk without having had any sleep at all.

"He's doing alright," Mr Worsley said. "He's been getting on with the Pro-Plus (energy tablets) and he'll be just fine."

Also faring well last night were Team Bloomers, headed up by Oxfam's own director of campaigns and policy Phil Bloomer.

Mr Bloomer, who is originally from Leeds, said: "We've had a terrific day – it's been typical Yorkshire weather! Warm and with a mild breeze, you couldn't have asked for more really.

"We're now heading into the night which will obviously be a bit of a hard slog, but we'll get there. We were hoping to finish in 22 hours, though we're a little bit behind schedule as we've had so many blisters. But at each checkpoint we've stopped, popped them, put some cream on, bandaged them up and carried on – nothing's going to stop us!"

Oxfam's James Terry said last night that only a very small number of participants have been forced to drop out of the race so far - a major improvement on last year when around a quarter of the teams did not manage to complete the event.

"It's going brilliantly, we're absolutely delighted," he said. "People have heeded the warnings and taken in plenty of fluids and used plenty of suncream. In fact we got through 1,600 litres of water at the very first checkpoint this morning!"

There was, however, heartbreak for the Mad Dog team, who had led the event for much of the day, when one of their members was forced to drop out early on Saturday evening.
