Further north, emergency engineering work at Northallerton in North Yorkshire led to delays between Darlington and York, affecting passengers with the CrossCountry, East Coast and First TransPennine Express train companies.

First TransPennine Express trains were unable to call at Northallerton, with a replacement bus service having to operate between Yarm and York.

Passengers travelling with four more companies - First Capital Connect, Gatwick Express, London Overground and Southern - were affected by delays after a vehicle hit a bridge at Norwood Junction in south-east London.

Meanwhile, delays that affected rush-hour services on London Underground’s Victoria line continued beyond noon.
