Training drive to nip trouble in bud at pubs

LICENSEES and door staff across Scarborough are being given expert training to prevent under-age drinking and antisocial behaviour ahead of the onset of the tourist season in Yorkshire’s most famous seaside resort.

The event has been organised by North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council trading standards and Scarborough Council, and follows two recent reviews of the licensing conditions of two bars.

Last month, the Blue Lounge, on Nicholas Street, was handed a strict list of conditions after police blamed it for fuelling some of the alcohol-related violence across the town.

Police figures showed there had been 62 incidents in the past year with people having teeth knocked out and being attacked with broken bottles and glasses.

The Hole In The Wall pub was also warned it could have its licence revoked, after repeated complaints about under-age drinkers propping up the bar.

Now a free event has been organised at Scarborough Spa to offer training to licensees, bar staff and bouncers across Scarborough, Filey and Whitby.

Inspector Tony Quinn, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “We will continue to play our part in supporting a flourishing night time economy in Scarborough, but our priority must remain public safety.

“The way forward is for police and licensed premises to work together.”

During the workshop, actors will imitate real life scenarios to help train staff.

Andy Skelton, Scarborough Council’s head of environmental services said: “I’m sure licensees, their staff and door supervisors will all benefit from it greatly by raising awareness and helping them to tackle the difficult situations they so often have to face.”

The event takes place on May 17 between 2pm and 5pm at Scarborough Spa.
