Airlift for boy after car hits bedroom

The 13-year-old was trapped in his wheelchair under the car for an hour before he was freed by the emergency services.

Yesterday Les Huxley, who arrived at the scene at Meadstead Drive, in Royston, Barnsley, shortly after the crash, said the car had gone straight into the building. “The car was well in the bungalow, you could just see the back end of it,” he said.

Another woman, who asked not be be named, said she knew the boy as Reece.

Yesterday the family’s home was boarded-up and the scene sealed-off. It is thought the car, a Vauxhall Astra, crashed through a bedroom window , where the boy was sitting at his computer.

Police said the boy suffered a broken right leg and was airlifted to hospital in Sheffield, where his condition was described as stable.

A police spokeswoman said the Astra is believed to have travelled down Manor Grove towards a T-junction with Meadstead Drive at 11.50am on Saturday.

Two of the boy’s brothers, aged eight and five, and a three year-old sister, who were playing in the bedroom, were slightly injured.
