Boy and girl hit by car on walk to school

A MOTHER has spoken of the horrifying moment when two young children were struck by a car while walking to a school breakfast club in Wakefield this morning.

A six-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury when she was in collision with a car while attempting to cross the road at Broadway in the Lupset area of Wakefield, just after 8am

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance.

A four-year-old boy, who was struck by the same car, was not seriously injured and was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield by ambulance.

It is understood the children were being walked to breakfast club at Snapethorpe Primary School on George Road, off Broadway, when the incident happened.

Mother-of-four Claire Jones, 37, of Broadway, said she was getting her children ready for school when the collision happened outside her home.

She said: “We heard this almighty bang and the screams, it was like something I’ve never heard before.

“My kids ran to the window and saw a girl laid in the road.

“My daughter shouted down ‘somebody has been run over’, so me any my brother ran out and saw her lying there.

People were shocked. They had tears in their eyes and were shaking. It was very upsetting.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “It is currently believed the children were attempting to cross the road and were in collision with the side of the vehicle as it was in motion.

“The six year old girl suffered a serious head injury and was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary. She remains there for treatment.”

The police spokesman added: “The four year-old was not seriously injured but was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield for checks.”
