Owner Pat Cole dialled 999 after Lily, an eight-year-old Pekingese, got her head trapped at Springbank Road, Gildersome, during a visit to a relative.

Despite her owner’s efforts, the pet pooch was stuck for 45 minutes before technical rescue officer Ian Stead used a tried and tested technique to dislodge her by rotating her 90 degrees.

He said: “Pat was very pleased to have her precious pet back in her arms. We have seen this kind of scenario before and the same technique has been used by us in the past and it works well.”

Mrs Cole, who lives in the area, said: “He did a marvellous job, without him I would have still have been struggling with her. She was stuck for around 45 minutes in the end.

“I really did not want to have to ring the fire service. I tried to get her out for 15 minutes but she began to panic.”
