Commuter chaos as crash shuts A1 in north Leeds

DRIVERS faced a nightmare commute to work today after a multi-vehicle collision blocked the A1 motorway in both directions, north-east of Leeds.

A lorry towing a generator is believed to have come loose from the towing vehicle on the south-bound carriageway at around 6.20am.

A lorry swerved to avoid the generator and crashed through the central reservation, shedding its load of cardboard which scattered over bother carriageways.

A Jaguar car which was also south-bound collided with the lorry, and a Ford Focus in the north-bound carriageway was also hit.

One driver was trapped in his vehicle and is understood to have been freed by fire crews.

Four men were taken to hospital. One is believed to be seriously injured.

Police said the A1 was expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours.
