Cyclist fighting for life in hospital after collision with car in Richmond

A CYCLIST is in a critical condition in hospital following a collision with a car in Richmond earlier this week.

The man in his sixties was riding a red and white bicycle along the B6271 Maison Dieu at Richmond just after 11.30am on Tuesday May 3 when the collision happened.

Police said the cyclist, who was heading towards Brompton on Swale, collided with the rear of a Honda Civic car being driven in the same direction.

The cyclist from Darlington area suffered serious injuries and was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by air ambulance, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Honda, a man in his eighties from the Richmond area, was uninjured.

The road was closed for three hours to enable police to investigate the scene.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who saw either the Honda or the cycle before the collision, to contact police.”!

“The cyclist was wearing a yellow-coloured top at the time and is believed to have travelled through Richmond from the direction of Gilling West prior to the collision.

“Officers are particularly keen to trace the driver of a light-coloured box van or lorry, which was travelling into Richmond from the direction of Brompton on Swale at the time. The driver may not be aware of the collision but may be able to assist with the investigation.”
