Cyclist killed in crash with van in Wakefield

A cyclist has died after a crash with a van.

The 47-year-old was riding on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, when he was involved in a collision with a white Ford Transit van near the junction with Oakenshaw Lane at around 7.50am today.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said the van driver was helping with their enquiries.

The road, which was closed while specialist officers examined the scene, has since re-opened.

Sergeant Carl Quinn of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said; “The severity of this incident caused disruption to commuters this morning in Wakefield but we are grateful to people for their understanding whilst we were conducting our investigations at the scene.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area and may have seen either the vehicle or the cyclist prior to the incident, or who witnessed the collision itself, to come forward.”
