Driver dies as three-lorry crash closes A1 in Yorkshire

A LORRY driver has died in a collision involving three HGVs which blocked one of the main routes in the north of England near Northallerton, causing major traffic problems.

North Yorkshire Police said the driver who died was in a lorry carrying gas bottles which was in collision with another wagon, carrying a combine harvester, which was parked in a lay-by on the A1.

The gas bottle lorry, which was travelling on the northbound carriageway, was then struck by a third HGV, which was towing a curtain-sided trailer.

The driver of this vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Officers said the collision took place at 2am.

The northbound A1 was closed completely and is not expected to reopen until late on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police collision investigators are carrying out inquiries at the scene and the vehicles involved will be recovered in due course.”

Traffic problems were exacerbated by a six-car accident on B6271 at Great Langton, which was being used at the time as a diversion route following the A1 crash.
