Drivers stranded for hours as M62 grinds to a halt

DRIVERS were stranded on the M62 in west Yorkshire for hours yesterday after a three-vehicle pile-up.

The crash involving two cars and a lorry happened near junction 30 at Lofthouse just after lunch on the eastbound carriageway.

One man was airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The eastbound motorway was closed off and westbound lanes were closed to allow the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to land.

A police spokesman confirmed the accident involved a white truck, a Citroen and an Audi, which had led to a “full closure” of the eastbound M62 between junctions 29 and 32.

Traffic was back to operating normally by 4.30pm, he said.

Some drivers stood beside their cars as they waited for the road to clear.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said one man was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary and last night his injuries were said to be “serious, but not life-threatening”.
