Emergency services called to serious crash on M18 in South Yorkshire

It happened at about 5pm on the southbound carriageway between Junction 2 at Wadworth Interchange and Junction 1 at Hellaby Interchange.

South Yorkshire Police closed both carriageways as emergency services attended the scene.

The northbound carriageway has reopened but the southbound carriageway remains closed.

Highways England urged drivers stuck behind the closure to remain in their cars.

It tweeted: "For those that are stuck in the closures on the #M18 - Please remain in your vehicles, we are hoping to have you moving soon.

"Please don't turn yourself around. This is dangerous to those still responding to the incident."

Delays are likely until at least 8.30pm and drivers are advised to avoid the area and use the M1 if possible.
