Fund launched for Yorkshire Pc killed on 999 call

THE two young sons of a police officer who died on duty will benefit from a fund which was launched in his memory today.

The fund for Pc Andrew Bramma’s boys, Jack, aged three, and 11-month-old Sam, was set up after the family was inundated with offers of support, North Yorkshire Police Federation said.

Pc Bramma, 32, died after his patrol van hit a tree in West Tanfield, near Ripon, North Yorkshire while he was responding to a 999 call on January 5.

His widow, Kathryn, said the family was touched by the support from colleagues and strangers alike.

“It is a source of comfort and pride for our family regarding the overwhelming support we have received,” she said in a family statement. “Andrew has always been a source of pride to the family, a loving husband and father and cherished son and brother.

“Andrew was everything said of him and more. We are deeply hurt by this tragedy but would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind words and support.

“We are hoping to find the strength from these to help us through this difficult time.”

North Yorkshire Police Federation said the fund will enable people who wish to donate, or have already donated money, to contribute to the future of Pc Bramma’s sons.

It said in a statement: “We have been inundated with offers of support from police officers and members of the public from around the country. Some have already sent money and many others are asking how they can help Andrew’s family.

“In response, today we are launching the North Yorkshire Police Federation Fund for Andrew’s two sons, Jack and Sam.

“Jack is three years old, he has recently started in reception class at school which he is enjoying. Jack is beginning to understand that his daddy won’t be coming home.

“Sam is just 11 months old and loves to play with noisy toys. Andrew was very proud when he saw Sam take his first steps, just a few days before he died. Sam is far too young to understand what has happened to his daddy.

“Kathryn is now facing the prospect of bringing up Jack and Sam without the emotional, practical or financial support that Andrew would have given her.

“The aim of this fund will be to enable Kathryn to give Jack and Sam at least the same opportunities that they would have had if Andrew had been there to provide for them throughout their childhood, into adolescence and beyond.”

The federation added that details of how donations can be made are being published on the North Yorkshire Police website and anyone who makes a donation can also leave a message in the book of condolence on the website.

North Yorkshire Police’s temporary Chief Constable, Tim Madgwick, said: “We are a force who care and we support each other and we wanted to do something appropriate to help Kathryn and the boys during this extremely difficult time and indeed in the future.”

Since Pc Bramma’s death more than 1,000 people have contributed to the online book of condolence on the North Yorkshire Police website.
