Police were yesterday continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident, but witnesses reported that the man had been hit after stepping out from the verge at the side of the road, on a section of the bypass that is subject to the national speed limit.

There were major tailbacks as the accident was cleared.

The Leeds-bound carriageway was reopened shortly after 6pm, with Bradford-bound traffic resuming a short time later.
