First Bus has introduced new measures to ensure social distancing on bus services in Leeds.

The bus operator, which runs the majority of services in the city, has introduced the new rules in response to government advice about maintaining social distancing on public transport.

It will be reducing the capacity on board the buses by more than 75 per cent - only one in four seats will be available.

Drivers will count passengers on and off, and will not allow anyone to board once the new capacity has been reached.

The First Bus website states that it is "likely" passengers will see 'Bus Full' signs more quickly.

It said: "On our buses we will be operating at a reduced capacity with around 1 in 4 seats being available.

"It is therefore likely that you will begin to see ‘Bus Full’ signs as some services reach their revised capacity more quickly.

"If you are waiting at a bus stop and the bus drives past, it is likely it has reached its reduced seating capacity.

"If the bus does stop, but is near capacity, the driver will only allow one person to board for every person that gets off, so you may need to allow extra time for your journey and be prepared to wait."

First Bus will also be introducing seat signs and tape to clearly mark where people should and should not sit to maintain a safe distance.

Standing will no longer be allowed.

The company is also asking passengers to travel if journeys are necessary.
