At this stage it appears no one else or any other vehicles were involved, a force spokewoman said.

The officer, who was wearing a cycle helmet at the time of the incident, had served with Nottinghamshire Police for nearly 24 years.

Chris Eyre, Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable, said: “Pete Parchment was an exceptional police officer who served the public of Nottinghamshire for nearly 24 years.

“The thoughts of everyone at Nottinghamshire Police are with his family as they attempt to come to terms with this tragic news.”

His family has asked for privacy at this time.
