The 6,000-ton City of Rotterdam was left with a gaping hole to its port after the collision with the Primula Seaways on Thursday night, as the North East Lincolnshire coast was battered by high winds and rain.

The City of Rotterdam, a car carrier, was leaving the Humber, and the 9,600-ton Primula Seaways, a ro-ro cargo ship was heading into the Humber when the collision occurred off Clee Ness sands.

Primula Seaways also sustained damage. Both made it safely back to port.

An investigation has now been launched to establish how the collision occurred.

There were no casualties or spillages.

It is thought the ships will be patched up and taken to Rotterdam for repair.
