Tragedy as York student, 20, dies in Australia

TRIBUTES have been paid to a university student from York who has died while in Australia.

Vicky Atlay, from York, travelled Down Under last weekend ahead of a year-long trip.

Officials at Swansea University said the 20-year-old was a media and communications student and had been heavily involved with students’ union TV channel SU-TV.

A spokeswoman said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Victoria Atlay. Our thoughts are with Victoria’s family at this time and we extend our deepest condolences at their tragic loss.”

In a tribute post on its Facebook page SU-TV said: “We would like to give our condolences to one of our enthusiastic members who passed away.

“Vicky Atlay was a huge asset to SU-TV. She helped out with a variety of events such as Oktoberfest, Strictly Come Dancing, and our short film, What Once Was.

“Our thoughts are with her friends and family.”

Foreign Office officials confirmed that died on Tuesday, July 21.

A spokesman said: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”

Ms Atlay’s death is understood not to be suspicious.
